Abstract
A three dimensional self-consistent theory of the gyrotron backward wave oscillator has been developed in slow-time-scale formulation. The efficiency of gyro BWO is nearly 10% in a uniform magnetic field but can be enhanced to exceed 25% by tapering the magnetic field. Results are shown for TE10 mode in rectangular waveguide and TE11 mode in cylindrical waveguide.
