Abstract
One of the basic problems in Optical Design concerns the fact that optimization programs are capable of effectively finding a local minimum, but that this local minimum will usually not be a real global minimum. In order to locate other local minima, it is usually necessary to search, more or less empirically, for alternative solutions. This paper is concerned with this problem, particularly in connection with some simple lens systems, in the expectation that an understanding of simple lenses will assist in dealing with more complex lenses.
