Abstract
When a material is in a strongly out-of-equilibrium condition an enormous number of degrees of freedom are unconstrained. This allows for the emergence of a number of qualitatively new phenomena. One famous example is the ultrafast spin transport triggered by femtosecond laser excitations. Few years ago I proposed a method to inject giants spin currents in semiconductors. We have recently experimentally confirmed the feasibility of the injection and broke by several orders of magnitude the record for peak amplitude of spin current injection in semiconductors. Another examples of the critical impact of out-of-equilibrium dynamics we have measured a large and anomalous THz emission from carbon nanotubes (CNTs). By using an unprecedentedly precise theoretical description of the thermalisation process, we have unveiled the importance of the role of excitons and in particular exciton impact ionisation to the THz emission in CNTs.
