Abstract
Exploring the cerebral structure-function correlation advances our understanding of the brain's underlying principles. The brain structure is static, while brain function is dynamically changing; thus the relationship has the unmatched issue of the temporal and spatial dimensions. It makes the structure-function relationship a challenging task. Partial least squares correlation (PLSC) is applicable to examining the structure-function association. Most of the studies explored how structural traits were linked to functional ones. However, if the relationship is explored at a voxel-wise level, perhaps more interesting results will be found. Actually, the ordinary PLSC cannot effectively handle the unmatched temporal dimension issue at the voxel-wise level, failing to establish suitable linear models. We propose a novel variety of PLSC, termed constant-block PLSC, to handle this issue. The performance of our method is compared with the ordinary PLSC by applying it to simulated structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) along with resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) information. As indicated by the results, the superiority of our approach to the common PLSC is that it extracts proper quantity of significant and realer spatial patterns, enhancing the cross-block covariance to 36.02%from 0%. Our constant-block PLSC technique is promising for assessing the relationship between cerebral architecture and functionality
