Abstract
With the development of optical communication technology, more and more waveguide devices are applied to commercial optical communication systems. The coupling of optical fiber and waveguide has become a bottleneck to reduce the cost of optical devices. Compared with active coupling, passive coupling uses a V slot corresponding to the waveguide and directly sticks the fiber into the V slot, greatly reducing the coupling time. However, when the passive coupling method is used in the existing literature and patents, the waveguide is engraved through another mask plate with a V-slot opening after making the waveguide, and there is a embedding error, so the coupling efficiency is not satisfactory. In this paper, a one-step embedding method is proposed, and the V-slot and the waveguide core layer pattern are designed on a mask plate. Through a special waveguide preparation process to complete the production of V slot at the same time, because the relative position of V slot and waveguide has been determined in the design of the mask plate, so the horizontal position of V slot can be made very precise, can ensure that the optical fiber and the waveguide core in the horizontal direction of alignment, by the width of the V slot to control the optical fiber and the waveguide core in the vertical direction of alignment, experimental results show that, when the width of V slot is 132μ m, the coupling efficiency is the highest, and the coupling insertion loss is only 0.07dB larger than that of the active coupling, which is basically close to the level of the active coupling. The one-step embedding method is simple, reliable, has the prospect of automation and large-scale application, and will greatly reduce the labor cost of optical device packaging.
