Abstract
Although there is a rather large interest in implementing stereoscopy on computer systems, there are few broad based tools for developing these applications. As a result, the application developer is often forced into developing his own low-level approach, or leaving out stereoscopy altogether. The majority of computer based stereoscopic solutions are very hardware dependent. Specialty solutions ,such as Redline from Rendition, or Glide (eventually) from 3Dfx, or even interlacing, provide stereoscopy to just a fraction of the potential users. Microsoft Windows, including Wind 95 and Win NT, has a very large customer base, running on a wide variety of hardware. It is generally understood that Windows provides a `hardware independent' solution to an application developer, in that the developer need not be concerned with the hardware on the system. Instead, the operating system and low-level drivers will manage the hardware interface. A goal in developing a stereoscopic toolkit for Windows would accomplish this, and not require a specific set of hardware be used. The following is a description of techniques to provide a hardware-independent stereoscopic application interface.
