Abstract

Optical technologies are going to challenge state of the art RF communication systems in future IOL, ISL and deep space scenarios. In addition, electrooptical systems are being considered by ESA and various national space agencies for space operational solid earth and atmospheric LIDAR and navigtion applications. This paper summarizes the present status of the CO₂ laser technology development and emphasizes the potential of emerging CO₂ hardware components and subsystems for future optical space mission scenarios.
