Abstract
Adding functionality to structured optical fibres promises to enhance their application range. This functionality critically depends on the evanescent field and both accessing and controlling it. We have explored a key approach based on depositing layers inside optical fibres. Of these, self-assembly of nanoparticles has proven to be surprisingly versatile, enabling us to demonstrate improved methods for optical field localisation. This work is reviewed here.
