Abstract
A new multiple resolution segmentation (MRS) technique for the tone-dominated images is presented. Pyramid structure is established to provide a series of images with the reduced size and the reduced resolution. A stochastic model-based image analysis technique -- our previous research work known as fixed resolution segmentation (FRS) -- is first applied at a selected higher level of pyramid, i.e., on an image with the coarse resolution. Then, the results obtained at this level are guided to the next (lower) level, i.e., the image with the finer resolution. This level-to-level downward operation is repeated until the base level of pyramid, i.e., the image with the original resolution is reached. Our studies show that MRS outperforms FRS in terms of its accuracy and speed. Examples are demonstrated and some theoretical analysis are included.
