Abstract
Basic problems related to crystals growing and material science of rare-earth scandium garnets (RESG) are considered from the point of view of their applications in solid-state lasers. Special concern is dedicated to solid solutions of scandium garnets combining positive qualities of both aluminum and gallium RESG. The role of chromium impurity in garnets, which has great and versatile influence on the growth of crystals as well as on their physical properties and lasing characteristics, is discussed. Mechanical, thermophysical, optical, spectroscopical, and other properties of rare-earth scandium garnets are considered.
