Abstract
Mid-IR spectra (4000 - 400 cm-1) of mixtures of HCl with methyl-d3, ethyl- d5, n-propyl, isopropyl-d7 or t-butyl chloride, dissolved in liquified argon (95 - 117 K) and liquified krypton (122 - 148 K) have been investigated. In all cases the formation of a 1:1 Van der Waals molecule between HCl and the alkyl chloride was observed. At higher concentrations, a new absorption band, due to a 1:2 complex (RCl)(DOT)(HCl)2 was found. Ab initio structural calculations at the RHF/6-31G** level show the complexes have an approximate L-shape.
