Abstract
The development and testing of a new targeting system for combining videometric images with electronic total station measurements is described. The system uses specially designed interchangeable targets to integrate the measurements. This allows the higher global accuracy and range of a total station to link control points for the videometric images of critical areas. The videometery provides faster and more convenient data acquisition, and a combination of the two systems offers advantages over either method alone. Lab tests and calibration of the two systems and targets have demonstrated relative accuracies of 1/12000 to 1/35000 using a KODAK DCS-420C digital still camera and a Leica TC2002 electronic total station. The combined system was applied to an industrial application for a fertilizer plant near Red Deer, Alberta with a global precision of 0.1 mm in a plane parallel to the image plane, and 0.4 mm out of the plane. Due to the improved target system, the survey was accomplished using only three control points and three images.
