Abstract
Compression and broadening of picosecond pulses in dispersion-shifted optical fibers are reported by directly displaying the temporal profile through a CSA803 communication signal analyzer. 46 ps pulses at 1.55 micrometers generated from a gain switched distributed feedback laser diode were broadened or compressed to 65 ps or 35 ps in a 10 km-long dispersion-shifted fiber with dispersion parameter of +/- 2 ps km-1 nm-1, respectively. 41 ps pulses at 1.26 micrometers were distorted and broadened to 100 ps in the fibers.
