Abstract
This paper discusses main aspects of trace gas sensing base don laser spectroscopic techniques. High detection sensitivities and selectivities are achieved by using tunable narrowband IR laser sources emitting preferentially in the mid-IR wavelength range. CO2 lasers, nonlinear optical devices such as optical parametric oscillators and difference frequency generation, as well as quantum cascade laser can be employed. Detection methods involve multipass transmission, intracavity absorption, photoacoustic and cavity ringdown schemes. The performance of various systems developed in our and other laboratories is illustrated with examples from different fields. Minimum detectable gas concentrations are at the ppb to sub-ppb level. Applications include fast analyses of multicomponent samples, field measurements in various environments as well as medical diagnostics.
