Abstract

The use of personal computers in Optical Design was first discussed widely at the International Lens Design Conference at Mills College, by Kidger , Sinclair, and others. Since then, the topic has been discussed at several International conferences, particularly the SPIE Conference at Geneva, in 1983, and the International Lens Design Conference at Cherry Hill, New Jersey, in 1985. Progress, both in terms of improvements in hardware as well as software has been quite dramatic, and this paper deals with some of the issues involved, with particular reference to the Optical Design software developed by Kidger Optics. Since the major advantages of using personal computers are now quite obvious, and have been discussed in detail in Refs 1, 2, 3 and 4, this paper will discuss new advances, since the last European SPIE Conference in 1983.
