Abstract
Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) provide superior properties concerning their geometry and electro-optical laser characteristics, such as narrow divergence of circular beam profile, single longitudinal mode output, and low power consumption. Especially VCSEL in the visible red spectral range become an important component in display and sensing applications in medicine and industry. In this contribution we present a review of our recent developments VCSEL in the emission range around 650 nm. Next to the properties of single devices we highlight the manipulation of the beam properties and show a route towards high output powers in this spectral range from large-area VCSEL.
