1 April 1999 High-speed and high-contrast incoherent-to-coherent converter that uses a GaAs single crystal

A new optically addressed spatial light modulator using a GaAs single crystal plate is developed for incoherent-to-coherent optical image converter. The device has the same structure as the Pockels readout optical modulator. The basic characteristics of the device are measured as half-wave voltage, 10.5 kV; sensitivity, 0.65 ?J/cm2 at visible light; and resolution, 5.6 line pairs/mm. The high-frame-rate (over 500 Hz) operation and high contrast ratio (over 700:1) are experimentally confirmed. The Fourier transforms of alphabetic characters are successfully performed and an application to joint transform correlator is demonstrated.
