Abstract
Many present-day color display systems incorporate Color Look-Up Tables (CLUTs) to compensate for small video refresh memory. The selection of color palette (representing colors selected for the CLUT) is critical for natural display of color images since the number of distinct colors displayable simultaneously is quite limited. This paper describes an efficient algorithm for optimal palette selection for a CLUT. The algorithm fully utilizes the distribution of pixels in three-dimensional color space. The algorithm is independent of the choice of color space. The results of computer simulation demonstrate that the algorithm is particularly useful for terminals with small refresh memory.
